Rest

Rest is something I definitely feel like I have been lacking lately. Between waking up anywhere from 4:15 am to 5:15 am daily, working, having a long commute, running, biking and swimming, being a wife and most importantly being a mom there is little time for rest. The past two weeks I have felt tired. While my workouts have gone well, actually this past week everything was right on target, both my body and mind have felt tired.

Saturday morning it was a struggle to get out of bed when the alarm went off at 5:15. It was one of those mornings when I just wanted to keep sleeping. But, if I did 1) I wouldn't beat the heat and 2) I would feel guilty taking more time away from Morgan (currently, if I can make it out the door by 6 I can be back home by 8, just as Morgan is eating breakfast). Anyway, I got up, got ready and hit the streets. It was a nice morning and the second half of the run felt much better, faster and stronger than the first. I was very pleased with how things went 13 down and good.

Sunday, my alarm was once again set in hopes of getting a nice ride in. However, when the alarm went off, I got up shut it off and went back to sleep. My body wasn't feeling like waking up and since Morgan was at my parents house it was a perfect opportunity to lay in bed as long as I wanted. When I finally got out of bed at 8:45, I did think about heading out for a short ride, but decided to just enjoy a full day of rest. I got in some stretching. My body could use one nice big stretch!

Last night, I had hoped for a great sleep to start the week off on a nice well rested note, but Morgan uncharacteristically got up, came in to our bedroom looking for me. Luckily, as soon as she got back to her bed she fell asleep, unlucky for me that I was up for the rest of the morning!

Sometimes you need to just let the body win... and take a rest day.

Cheers to a great week ahead!

Good for you for listening to your body and knowing what you needed! I have issues with that, too, but sometimes no exercise is better than pushing ourselves to the limit!

I have been struggling with the overpacked schedule as well. There is just too much to do! Sounds like you needed that rest day!

i never know how you mom's do it! i am quite sure i could never 'juggle' half as many responsibilities. you are amazing :)

you definitely deserved some extra rest! i'm sure the lounge day will be more beneficial in the long run because you didn't push your body over the limit when it was tired.

good on you for taking the rest that your body obviously needed. I find my body more tired too now that I'm trying to fit in running, cycling and swimming with life. :)

I think the juggling act counts for some major cross training - it gets intense trying to fit it all in, & rest is well-deserved for sure!

It sounds like you made the right decision! I'm sure your body is thanking you mightily.

I've been struggling with the sleep thing too lately! My alarm goes off and I just cannot pull myself out of bed. If only I could make myself go to bed by 9 om it would be easier!

Wow you are one busy lady. I definitely think our body gives us signs when it needs a break and when we don't listen bad things (injuries) happen.

Sometimes it is just life that causes sleeplessness. The heat of a day takes a long time to dissipate and by the time your body adjusts, you wake up. Leave a fan on and it gets too cold.
Keep it up, Diana! Sleep does catch up eventually!

I have so much respect for Mom's who exercise and work.

I don't have any kids and still find it hard to fit everything in. I love my sleep and I think that's one thing that will be hard for me to give up if I ever have kids.

Enjoy your rest!

Glad you got in your 13 on Satuday, I love when I don't want to finish something and I do anyway, I always feel so much better! But sometimes you just need to turn off the alarm and roll over, sounds like a wonderful Sunday!

Maybe there's something about this time of year. I have been waking up in the middle of the night for some unknown reason and my sleeps have been terrible. I, too, and feeling tired even while my training has been going well. I hope you come through this lull quickly and feel your old self again soon!

I don't know how you constantly do all those super early mornings - glad you got a late one in there. Don't you love it when you plan on getting a good night's rest and the kiddo decides not to sleep? :)

Great job on your workouts and multitasking! Sometimes the smartest thing you can do in training is take that much-needed rest...so glad you listened to your body. :) Keep it up!

You need to let your body decide for you sometimes. Try not to feel guilty about getting a few more hours of sleep...it's the best thing you can do for yourself.

Sounds like a rest day very well earned. Your body will thank you in the long run. :o)

Hectic life, listen to your body. For me waking up anywhere from 4:15 am to 5:15 is only a memory of the period when I was in the Coast Guard.

I have sooo much respect for parents who are able to maintain a healthy lifestyle and train. I don't know how you do it!

Good call on the rest day.

And thanks for the comment on my blog. If you have any questions about RI 70.3 give me a shout (pjgonzalesali at gmail dot com). I've done it twice so I know the ropes!

It does sound like you have a super busy schedule, I'm surprised that you have been able to keep it up for so long. The rest is well deserved and I always have those days where I just need to sleep in.

Hey D,

Thanks for the tip on Nuun, I've heard of it and just found a store near me (well 20 miles away), but will try to get there this week.

How do you use it? How often do you drink during your runs, or during your marathons?

I've still got so much to learn, but thankfully still lots of time before NYC.

Thanks again for the suggestion:)

Sometimes you need the rest, glad you were able to take it. Listen to your body:)!!

You are funny...when my kids are with grandma, I've been known to sleep until 11 if my hubs lets me! Sleep is almost a luxury to working/running moms. I'm glad you listened to your body and gave it a break for a day.

I was going to say that next to protein rest is the best way to recover but I think Rest is #1 for allowing your body time to recover and to get stronger..just eat your protein before you rest :)
Love the blog!

I got sleepy just reading your post! Ha ha. Identifying when your mind is trying to cop-out and be lazy vs. your body begging you for a brea, can be tricky, but it totally sounds like you made the right decision about hitting the snooze button.

Hey, super thanks for the well wishes over on my blog re: my race. This sport really is amazing, isn't it?
